About Us

Windermere River house

Windermere retreats in leisure travel started in 1997 as a hobby by Simon John, who was then a practising Ophthalmic Surgeon. We take the name Windermere from the old cardamom estate in Munnar that Simon bought in 1987 as his venture in farming and later here was the first venture into tourism with Windermere Estate retreat; The estate was so named by the earlier occupant a civil servant under the British Raj, who had visiting friends that remarked not he the striking resemblance of the region with Lake district in UK, thus fell the name Windermere. The name stuck and continues to be part of our legacy. Windermere as a place of retreat began as an extension of a home and this ethos has been carried on with the continuous attempt to stay small and personal.
During Dr. Simon's routine journeys from Cochin to Munnar, the region adjacent to the Periyar captivated him, leading to the discovery of a magical spot in 2012. Originally envisioned as a holiday home by the river, this revelation birthed Windermere River House, evolving from a rubber plantation to a diverse, lush terrace garden adorned with native and exotic flora.
The transformation reflects a continuous commitment to progress and an appreciation for sustainable, vibrant landscapes.
owned enterprise, and over the years we have forged a team of people who are enthused by the Windermere way of life and service, who are able to stitch for you that perfect experience. We continue to evolve keeping our guiding principles intact.
